I'm a designer and so are you. You might be another design professional reading this, so yeah, you are a designer. If not, I still think you're a designer. If you have ever formulated a solution to a challenge you've got some designer in you! Maybe you've taken a few minutes to think about how to efficiently tackle your to-do list? Or even where the best place to record that to-do list is (I have a friend with a single sheet of paper on his desk and that's where everything gets recorded...EVERYTHING). That's problem-solving—that's design.
That single sheet of paper that my friend uses? Blank and beautiful at 8.5 x 11 inches, it was designed. Originally the 8.5 x 11 inch sized paper was designed for monospaced typewriters and handwriting. Yet my friends piece of paper came from a box labeled "Copy Paper" with details about being "99.9% jam free" and "for high-quality document printing". It's paper that we feed into a printer. And apparently it's actually a bit too big for comfortable 12pt font reading. But it stuck and we made it work. My friend made it work as his single-page notebook and I made it work for my endless sharpie brain-dumps.
So is the US standard 8.5 x 11 paper good design? If the challenge is that we need to have a paper size that makes for a smooth reading experience without waste — maybe not (as discussed here). If the challenge is "Is there a any paper around here that I can use?", it probably is. As a design professional I have the answer right?
I have an answer. But I don't have the answer. This is why we are all designers.
